Remnants of C18 landscape park substantially built
over from mid to late C19, 1732-35 for John Cossins,
on site of C17 Court with walled and terraced formal
gardens; knot garden in box; lime avenue (Lovers’
Walk) to House originally c1732 and replanted late
C19, runs through Cotham Gardens, an informal park
now part play area 1879 by Bristol Corporation, and
Grove Park 1884 presented to Corporation by W.H.G.
Edwards; connected by ornamental footbridge over
railway. Redland Green formerly Chapel Green
informal park with network of paths, some planted with
planes 1920s by Bristol Corporation, centred on
ornamental C18 chapel; bowling green; play area;
allotment gardens.
Redland Court was Redland High School, now redeveloped for residential use.
Communal garden 1790-1815 on different levels of
steep slope: steps down from road; mature trees;
shrubberies.
Municipal park 1884: network of paths; mature trees
mostly London plane; shrubberies; rockeries; pond;
play area.
Municipal park 1890-95: informal layout with paths and
specimen trees on sloping site with view; bowling
green; play area 1946; static water tank converted to
paddling pool 1950-51; sundial, plinth only remains.

London planes; specimen trees, many recent;
naturalistic boating lake with island and boat-house;
raised mound, previously bandstand, demolished

Railings. piers and gates (LB II) 1898 by Sir Frank
Wills as entrance to Victoria Library (demolished
c1960s) now park entrance.
Municipal park 1925, layout altered 1949-50, on site of
‘retreat’ with paths of levelled tombstones, formerly St.
James’s Churchyard, Bristol’s oldest church; mature
boundary plane trees; shrubberies.

Communal garden 1789-1838: raised roughly circular
lawn with stone retaining wall; informal tree planting.
Former communal garden 1756 to surrounding
Georgian houses (now gone); unenclosed irregular
shape; grass with line of mature limes; rockery in
shrubbery; monument consisting of freestone conduit
head on pennant base with Gothic trefoil arches
topped by a fir cone.

C19 and mid C20 garden on C17 site: ruined gazebo;
buttressed garden wall; mature specimen trees,
Wellingtonia, monkey puzzle and other exotic conifers;
remains of C20 ‘wild garden’ between wall & stream;
formerly included Henleaze Lake and Badock’s Wood,
Gazebo and wall (LB II) late C17.
