C18 parkland, overlooking Avon valley, now in divided ownership, and chiefly agricultural use; designed by ‘Capability’ Brown 1767-68. Archaeological remains of elaborate garden of Elizabethan manor near church; estate sold C18 and new house built on site of old summerhouse. Surviving features include terrace commanding fine views; ha-ha; ornamental woodland; icehouse. Many parkland trees felled since 1882.

Early C19 picturesque garden on hanging site overlooking valley and Smallcombe Wood. Laid out by the painter Benjamin Barker, ‘the English Poussin’: terrace near house, fountain and pool, raised stone flowerbed; below terrace an elaborate chain of pools and cascades crossed by single-arched bridge, spectacular cedars. Fine specimen trees and shrubs; large kitchen garden.

Early C18 garden, overlaid with early and later C20 additions. Pools, stone-built cascade, well-preserved mount and terraces appear to date from building of house, and suggest an original layout of terraces, pleasure grounds, and miniature park or meadow. Early C20 Italianate layout by former owner, Horace Annesley Vachel, attributed to Harold Peto, comprises reworked terraces, formal pool, water-garden, hedges; continuing modifications c1970.
